GUTTER CLEANING FAQ

Everything Utah homeowners need to know about gutter cleaning, maintenance, and preventing winter damage.

How much does gutter cleaning cost in Utah?

For a typical Wasatch Front home:

  • Single-story home (up to 2,500 sq ft): $100–$180
  • Two-story home: $180–$280
  • Larger homes or complex rooflines: $250–$400+

These prices include flushing downspouts, testing drainage, and a basic inspection. We provide photos of the before and after condition.

How often should I clean my gutters in Utah?

It depends primarily on your tree coverage:

  • No trees within 30 feet: Once per year (fall)
  • Deciduous trees nearby (maples, oaks, cottonwoods): Twice per year (spring and fall)
  • Pine or evergreen trees: 2–3 times per year (pine needles accumulate year-round)
  • Commercial properties: Quarterly inspection and cleaning
When is the best time to clean gutters in Utah?

Late fall (October–November) is the most critical timing — after leaves have fallen but before hard freezes. This prevents ice dams and winter gutter damage. Spring (March–April) is the second priority — removing the winter's accumulated debris and inspecting for freeze-thaw damage. If you can only do one cleaning per year, late fall is more important.

What happens if I don't clean my gutters before Utah winter?

The main risks are:

  • Ice dams: Water backs up under shingles, causing roof damage and potential water intrusion
  • Gutter and fascia damage: Ice weight pulls gutters away from the house; wet debris accelerates wood rot
  • Foundation problems: Overflowing water saturates soil at the foundation, especially damaging in Utah's clay-heavy soils
  • Pest habitat: Damp leaf debris is ideal nesting material for rodents and wasps
What does professional gutter cleaning include?

Our full gutter cleaning service includes:

  • Manual debris removal from all gutter sections
  • Downspout flushing — clearing blockages completely
  • Water flow testing to confirm proper drainage
  • Inspection of hangers, slope, joint seams, and fascia board condition
  • Photo documentation of before/after condition
  • Written report of any damage or concerns found
Can I clean my own gutters?

Yes, for single-story homes with accessible gutters. You'll need a stable ladder, gloves, a scoop or hand trowel, a garden hose, and time. The main risks are ladder falls (the #1 cause of DIY home maintenance injuries) and missing downspout clogs that aren't visible from above. For any two-story or higher home, professional service is safer and usually more thorough — we can see and access things that are difficult from a household ladder.

Do you install gutter guards?

We clean gutters with existing gutter guards and can assess their effectiveness. We don't install gutter guards as a primary service, but we're happy to give you our honest assessment of whether guards would benefit your specific tree situation. Note: gutter guards are not maintenance-free — they still require periodic cleaning, just less frequently.

My gutters are overflowing during rain — is that definitely a clog?

Overflow is usually a clog, but there are three possible causes: (1) debris clog in the gutter or downspout (most common); (2) slope problem — gutters improperly angled toward the fascia rather than the downspout; (3) undersized gutters — some older Utah homes have 4-inch gutters that can't handle heavy rainfall or snowmelt. We diagnose the cause when we clean and let you know if a slope adjustment or upgrade is needed.
