Eco-Friendly Exterior Cleaning: How HHH Protects Utah's Environment
Utah has an extraordinary natural environment. The mountains, canyons, and high desert landscapes that make this state special also make it ecologically fragile — particularly in terms of water quality. What runs off a driveway or building eventually reaches waterways, storm drains, and ultimately the Great Salt Lake watershed.
For a business that uses cleaning chemicals and large volumes of water as its core tools, this matters. Here's how HHH Building Services approaches exterior cleaning with genuine environmental responsibility.
Our Chemical Philosophy
We made a decision early on to use only biodegradable, plant-safe cleaning solutions across all of our services. This isn't just marketing language — it means we don't use:
- Phosphate-based cleaners that contribute to algal blooms in waterways
- Bleach-based solutions as a first resort (we use them in specific situations like roof cleaning, with proper dilution and containment protocols)
- Caustic alkalis that damage soil biology
- Persistent synthetic surfactants that don't break down in soil or water
Instead, our primary cleaning solutions are plant-derived surfactant-based, pH-neutral where possible, and certified biodegradable. They do their job effectively and break down harmlessly in soil and water.
Water Conservation
Water is precious in Utah — we rank among the most water-stressed states in the country, and drought conditions have been persistent in recent years. Water conservation in exterior cleaning is both an environmental responsibility and a practical concern.
Soft Washing Uses Significantly Less Water
Soft washing, our preferred method for siding, stucco, and delicate surfaces, uses far less water than high-pressure washing because the chemistry does most of the work. We don't need to flood a surface to clean it when the solution is breaking down contaminants at the molecular level.
Water Recovery on Hard Surfaces
For driveway and concrete washing — where the water volume is highest — we use berms and collection systems where required by local storm water ordinances, particularly for commercial properties and situations where significant contaminants (oil, chemical residues) are being removed.
Purified Water Recycling
Our pure water window cleaning systems filter and purify tap water using reverse osmosis and deionization. The reject water from this process is captured and reused for rinse applications rather than discharged.
Protecting Your Landscaping
We frequently work near landscaping, irrigation systems, gardens, and lawn areas. Our approach:
- Pre-wet soil and plantings before using any cleaning solution nearby, which reduces absorption of cleaning agents
- Divert runoff away from garden beds using portable berms when treating driveways or walkways
- Use the minimum effective concentration of any cleaning solution — more isn't better when you're working around plants
- Post-rinse any area where cleaning solution contacted soil or plantings
In 24 years, we have never had a plant damage claim. That track record matters to us.
Pet and Family Safety
Our products are safe for children and pets once dried. We ask that pets be kept inside or away from the work area during service, and recommend waiting until surfaces are fully dry before allowing pets in treated areas. For clients with specific sensitivities, we can provide full ingredient lists for every product we use.
The Business Case for Eco-Friendly Cleaning
We're sometimes asked whether eco-friendly products "work as well" as harsher alternatives. Our experience: for the vast majority of cleaning tasks, yes. Biodegradable surfactants are highly effective at removing organic contamination — algae, mold, pollen, biological films — which is what most exterior cleaning involves.
For the specific situations where stronger chemistry is genuinely necessary — severe biological growth on roofs, heavy efflorescence on masonry, rust staining — we use appropriate professional products with the proper safety protocols. Being eco-conscious doesn't mean being ineffective. It means using the right tool at the right concentration for the specific job.
Our H³ promise extends to the environment: Honest about what we use and why. Humble enough to use less when less is sufficient. Helpful in protecting your property and the environment around it. Call (801) 999-8430 to learn more about our approach.
